So.... what is this about?

I work at a school library which caters for pre k to year 12 students. The highest turnover of books is in the junior school. However we have noticed that high decline in borrowing as the students move into years 5 & 6 and in particular with boys.

The target group that my blog promotion is aimed at is boys in years 5 & 6 who are reluctant readers and getting them hooked on books that are on the PRC list to encourage further reading. The 10 titles selected are deliberately  part of a series. The intention is to help these boys find the joy in reading and to then be able to follow on from the first book with somewhere to go. Once they find a book that they like they will want to find out what happens next and be keen to pick up the next book.

Three different genres are chosen to focus on in the suggested titles list. They are predominantly humour-filled books. They are fiction stories, aimed at younger readers, so they include comic-style and diary writing approaches, making them easy reads with lots of images to help their imagination.

Selected also are mystery and fantasy adventure titles. The intention was to give them a choice, but to keep it simple and easy to read so that they won’t get overwhelmed by seeing mainly text and thinking that it will be too much reading to get through.
